What is MAT?

MAT is the most effective treatment for people with OUD.

Medication-assisted treatment (MAT) is the use of medications in combination with counseling and behavioral therapies used to treat opioid use disorders (OUD)—addictions to heroin, fentanyl, prescription opioids like Vicodin and OxyContin. Opioid use disorder is a complex, chronic condition that changes a person’s brain chemistry, making them physically and psychologically dependent. MAT—as provided by an opioid treatment program—is the most effective treatment approach for getting people into long-term recovery.

Regardless of what setting MAT is provided in, it is more effective when counseling and other behavioral health therapies are included to provide patients with a whole-person approach.
